The '''Input–Process–Output (IPO) model''' describes a fundamental model of information processing: a digital system receives an '''input''', processes it and produces an '''output'''. This principle can be observed in computers, smartphones, tablets and many other digital devices.
== Learning objectives ==

Students can:

* explain the terms '''input''', '''processing''' and '''output''';
* distinguish typical input and output devices;
* describe the processor as a central processing component of a computer;
* trace the path from input to output in simple examples;
* apply the IPO model to different digital devices and everyday situations;
* recognise that several hardware and software components must work together.

== Learning content ==

=== Basic principle ===

A digital device processes information in several steps. In a simplified form, this can be represented by the IPO model:

# '''Input (I):''' Data or commands enter the system.
# '''Processing (P):''' The system processes the input according to defined rules or programs.
# '''Output (O):''' The result is presented or passed on to another system.

A computer does not “understand” an input in the same way as a human being. It processes data according to the instructions provided by its software. The type of processing therefore depends on the program being used and the task being performed.

=== Input ===

'''Input''' means information or commands supplied to a digital system. Typical input devices include:

* '''keyboard''' – entering letters, numbers and commands;
* '''mouse or touchpad''' – selecting and controlling elements on the screen;
* '''touchscreen''' – input through touch;
* '''microphone''' – recording speech and other audio signals;
* '''camera or webcam''' – recording images and video;
* '''sensors''' – detecting values such as brightness, movement, temperature or position.

A file opened by a program can also be considered an input.

=== Processing ===

Processing takes place inside the digital system. In a computer, the '''processor (CPU)''' performs an important part of this work. It executes program instructions and processes data.

Examples of processing include:

* adding two numbers;
* formatting entered text;
* reducing the size of a photo;
* comparing a search term with stored data;
* playing music or video;
* sorting or filtering data.

The processor, main memory, storage and other components work together during processing. Hardware provides the technical capabilities; software determines which processing steps are carried out.

=== Output ===

'''Output''' is the result of processing. Typical output devices include:

* '''screen''' – displays text, images, video and user interfaces;
* '''speakers or headphones''' – output sound and speech;
* '''printer''' – produces digital content on paper;
* '''LED or indicator light''' – shows the state of a device;
* '''vibration motor''' – provides tactile feedback.

An output does not always have to be intended for a person. A digital device can also send a result as data to another device or program.

== Everyday examples ==

=== Writing text ===

* '''Input:''' A key is pressed.
* '''Processing:''' The program processes the keyboard signal and assigns a character to it.
* '''Output:''' The letter appears on the screen.

If the document is saved, the data is also written to a storage medium.

=== Taking a photo with a smartphone ===

* '''Input:''' The camera captures light.
* '''Processing:''' The image sensor and software process the captured data.
* '''Output:''' The photo is shown on the display and can be saved as a file.

=== Cash machine ===

* '''Input:''' Card, PIN and requested amount.
* '''Processing:''' The system checks the input and carries out the transaction according to defined rules.
* '''Output:''' Cash, an on-screen message or a receipt.

=== Search engine ===

* '''Input:''' A search term is entered.
* '''Processing:''' The search engine compares the query with its search index and evaluates matching results.
* '''Output:''' A list of search results is displayed.

== Input and output at the same time ==

Some devices can both receive input and provide output. A '''touchscreen''', for example, displays content and detects touches at the same time. A headset combines headphones and a microphone, so it also supports both input and output. The relevant function must therefore always be considered when classifying a device.

== Relationship between hardware and software ==

The IPO model depends on several components working together:

* input devices provide data;
* the processor and other hardware process it;
* software determines the processing steps;
* main memory holds data currently required;
* storage drives can store data permanently;
* output devices present the results.

The IPO model is therefore a simple way of understanding how [[DGB 1: Hardware/en|hardware]] and software work together.

== Classroom activities ==

=== Activity 1: Classify devices ===

Classify the following as input, output, or both input and output: keyboard, monitor, touchscreen, microphone, printer, webcam, headset and mouse.

'''Task:''' Create a table with three columns and justify at least three classifications in complete sentences.

=== Activity 2: Describe a process ===

Choose an everyday situation, for example taking a smartphone photo, writing a text, playing music, carrying out internet research or using a cash machine.

'''Task:''' Describe the input, processing and output in your example.

=== Activity 3: IPO in the classroom ===

Find digital devices in the classroom and consider which inputs they receive, what processing takes place and which outputs are produced.

'''Expected outcome:''' A complete IPO process is described for at least three devices.

=== Activity 4: Find the fault in the process ===

A student presses a key, but nothing appears on the screen.

'''Task:''' Think of several possible causes. Could the fault be in the input, processing or output? Explain your ideas.

== Self-check ==

* I can explain the IPO model in my own words.
* I can distinguish input and output devices.
* I can describe the role of the processor in simple terms.
* I can identify input, processing and output for a digital device.
* I can explain why hardware and software need to work together.
