Media never reproduce reality in a completely neutral way. Every report, photo, video and data graphic involves choices about selection, framing, wording, cropping, order and emphasis. Students learn to analyse these choices and distinguish legitimate editing from misleading or manipulative presentation.

Area Classification
Competence area Information
Perspectives G, I
Focus Understanding how media reality is constructed through selection, framing and manipulation techniques
Competence Analyse how media construct representations of reality and recognise manipulation through selection, framing, images, sound, data and synthetic media.

Learning objectives

[Bearbeiten]

Students can:

  • explain why media representations are constructed selections of reality;
  • identify framing and editorial selection;
  • analyse personalisation and algorithmic selection;
  • recognise common patterns in fake news and misleading posts;
  • identify how cropping, editing and image manipulation change meaning;
  • explain the challenges of deepfakes and synthetic audio/video;
  • recognise misleading charts, statistics and selective data;
  • check source, context, date and interests behind a message;
  • analyse language, tone and design as persuasive techniques;
  • perform a basic fact-check using independent evidence;
  • reflect on consequences for trust and opinion formation.

Learning content

[Bearbeiten]

Media do not mirror reality neutrally

[Bearbeiten]

A camera angle, headline, quotation and selection of facts all influence what audiences notice. Construction is unavoidable; manipulation occurs when choices are used to create a false or unjustifiably distorted impression.

Selection, framing and editorial choices

[Bearbeiten]

Framing means presenting an issue through a particular interpretive lens. Ask what is included, what is missing, which voices appear and which terms are used.

Personalisation and algorithmic selection

[Bearbeiten]

Feeds and recommendation systems decide which available items become visible to a user. This can improve relevance while also narrowing attention or amplifying highly engaging content.

Fake news and misleading information

[Bearbeiten]

Warning signs include missing evidence, invented sources, false context, manipulated media, extreme emotional language and claims that cannot be independently verified.

Image manipulation and visual staging

[Bearbeiten]

Cropping, filters, retouching, composition and captions can change interpretation even when the underlying photograph is genuine. Reverse-image search or original-source checks can help recover context.

Deepfakes and synthetic media

[Bearbeiten]

AI can generate convincing text, voices, images and video. Visual realism alone is therefore not sufficient evidence; provenance, context and independent confirmation become more important.

Data and statistics

[Bearbeiten]

Selective time ranges, truncated axes, inappropriate percentages or omitted denominators can create misleading impressions while using technically real numbers.

Context, interests and source criticism

[Bearbeiten]

Check who published the content, for what purpose, when it was created, where the evidence comes from and whether credible independent sources agree.

Language, sound and design

[Bearbeiten]

Music, pacing, colour, labels and emotionally loaded words influence interpretation. These techniques are not automatically dishonest, but their persuasive role should be visible.

Classroom activities

[Bearbeiten]

Two reports, one event

[Bearbeiten]

Compare two accounts of the same event and identify selection, framing and missing context.

Expected outcome: A framing comparison.

Crop and effect

[Bearbeiten]

Use prepared images with different crops and captions to analyse how meaning changes.

Expected outcome: A visual analysis.

Tone changes opinion

[Bearbeiten]

Compare neutral and emotionally loaded wording for the same facts.

Expected outcome: A language analysis.

Fake or context error

[Bearbeiten]

Distinguish fabricated information from genuine media used in the wrong context.

Expected outcome: A classification.

Data can mislead

[Bearbeiten]

Repair a chart with a misleading scale, selection or missing denominator.

Expected outcome: A corrected visualisation.

Inspect a feed

[Bearbeiten]

Analyse why certain posts may be ranked prominently in a simulated feed.

Expected outcome: A ranking hypothesis.

Editorial conference

[Bearbeiten]

Choose which verified facts belong in a short report and justify the decisions.

Expected outcome: An editorial plan.

Check image, audio and data

[Bearbeiten]

Apply a common verification checklist to three different media types.

Expected outcome: A verification record.

Discuss deepfakes

[Bearbeiten]

Evaluate risks and legitimate uses of synthetic media.

Expected outcome: A balanced discussion.

Make manipulation visible

[Bearbeiten]

Create an ethical demonstration showing how framing changes perception, clearly labelled as an exercise.

Expected outcome: A before-and-after example.

Fact-check workshop

[Bearbeiten]

Verify one claim through original sources and independent confirmation.

Expected outcome: A sourced fact-check.

Media diary

[Bearbeiten]

Record examples of framing or persuasive design without collecting private content.

Expected outcome: A reflection log.

Self-check

[Bearbeiten]
  • I understand that media representation always involves selection.
  • I can distinguish framing from outright fabrication.
  • I can check context, source, date and evidence.
  • I can recognise visual, linguistic and statistical manipulation techniques.
  • I treat synthetic media critically without assuming that every unusual item is fake.
  • I can carry out a basic fact-check.
