Digital Literacy in Year 1 develops basic skills for using digital devices, information and media safely, thoughtfully and independently. Students learn fundamental technical principles, carry out internet research, manage files, protect personal data, collaborate digitally and create their first digital content.

The course is based on the five competence areas of the Austrian curriculum: Orientation, Information, Communication, Production and Action.

Competence areas and chapters

[Bearbeiten]

Orientation

[Bearbeiten]

The competence area Orientation focuses on understanding digital technologies, recognising their importance in everyday life and reflecting on personal patterns of media use.

  1. Input–Process–Output (IPO) Model
  2. Analogue vs. Digital
  3. Personal Digital Media Use

Information

[Bearbeiten]

Students learn how to search for information purposefully, assess search results critically and manage data on digital devices in a meaningful way.

  1. Search Engines and How They Work
  2. Understanding and Assessing Personalised Search Results
  3. Carrying Out Simple Internet Research and Assessing Information
  4. Storing, Managing and Editing Information as Data

Communication

[Bearbeiten]

Digital communication requires technical knowledge, responsible handling of personal data and clear rules for working together.

  1. Understanding and Protecting Personal Information
  2. Digital Collaboration and Responsible Online Cooperation
  3. Digital Communication and Collaboration Tools

Production

[Bearbeiten]

In the competence area Production, students create and edit digital content. They also learn basic principles of algorithmic thinking.

  1. Clear Instructions and Algorithms
  2. Forms of Representation and Their Effects
  3. Collecting, Calculating and Presenting Data
  4. Structuring and Formatting Texts and Presentations

Action

[Bearbeiten]

Students learn to understand digital devices as technical systems, place changes in the media world in context and use suitable help resources when problems occur.

  1. Physical Components of Computer Systems and How They Work Together
  2. Forms of Media Use, Media Change and Social Change
  3. Using Help Systems to Solve Problems

Practical basic skills

[Bearbeiten]

In addition to subject-specific concepts, Year 1 develops practical skills needed for further work with digital devices. These include:

  • operating programs and digital devices safely;
  • saving, opening, copying, moving, searching for, renaming and deleting files;
  • using folders to organise files clearly;
  • using a web browser and opening internet addresses;
  • choosing suitable search terms and comparing search results;
  • recognising and protecting personal data;
  • using digital communication and collaboration tools appropriately;
  • structuring and formatting texts and presentations clearly;
  • collecting, calculating and presenting simple data;
  • using help functions and suitable instructions when technical problems occur.

Learning objective for Year 1

[Bearbeiten]

By the end of Year 1, students should not only be able to operate digital devices, but also explain basic technical relationships, select information consciously and use digital tools with increasing independence, safety and responsibility.
