DGB 2: Media Production and Consumption

Aus Informatik.wiki

← Digital Literacy – Year 2

Media content is produced under particular technical, economic, political and social conditions. Anyone who consumes or produces media should therefore ask: Who created this content, for what purpose, for which target group, on which platform and under which conditions?

Focus Media production, publication and media consumption
Competence Recognise and compare interests and conditions behind the production, publication and use of media and critically consider their possible effects.

Learning objectives

[Bearbeiten]

Students can:

  • distinguish between information, entertainment, advertising, opinion and staging;
  • name different actors involved in media production and describe possible interests;
  • explain economic interests such as advertising, subscriptions, reach and attention;
  • describe how platforms and recommendation systems influence visibility;
  • recognise how language, images, music and editing address target groups;
  • examine headlines and thumbnails for exaggeration and attention effects;
  • recognise political, economic and personal interests as possible influences;
  • reflect on their own media use in relation to trends, groups and recommendations;
  • compare media content by intention, design, source and distribution channel;
  • plan their own media products purposefully and responsibly.

Learning content

Actors and interests

[Bearbeiten]

Media can be produced by editorial teams, companies, public institutions, influencers, political groups, interest groups or private individuals. Possible goals include information, entertainment, sales, image-building, persuasion and participation. A media contribution should therefore also be considered in terms of whose interests may have influenced its creation.

Financing and business models

[Bearbeiten]

Media services can be financed through advertising, subscriptions, sales, sponsorship or public funding. The business model can influence which types of content are especially attractive to a provider. On advertising-funded platforms, attention is economically valuable because longer use, clicks and interactions can increase reach or advertising opportunities. This does not mean that every item is manipulative, but it helps explain why reach matters.

Platform logic and reach

[Bearbeiten]

Digital platforms sort and recommend content automatically. Signals may include previous use, recency, reactions and assumed interests. Visibility is therefore influenced not only by the producer but also by technical distribution. Producers often adapt titles, thumbnails, length and storytelling to the platform.

Design and effect

[Bearbeiten]

Image selection, music, camera angle, editing, colour, wording and order shape how a contribution is perceived. A dramatic tone can make an event seem more threatening; a narrow crop can remove important context. Media analysis therefore examines content and design together.

Media consumption and recommendations

[Bearbeiten]

People do not only see content they actively search for. Notifications, friends, trends, autoplay, recommendations and previous use also shape media consumption. If someone repeatedly selects similar content, they may receive increasingly similar recommendations. Conscious media use therefore includes actively seeking other suitable sources and perspectives.

Responsibility when producing media

[Bearbeiten]

Producing media means making choices about selection, language, images and audience. Responsible work separates fact from opinion, labels advertising or reused material appropriately and avoids misleading exaggeration. Planning should include topic, purpose, target group, format, sources, publication channel and a final quality check.

Classroom activities

[Bearbeiten]

Compare media contributions and identify interests

[Bearbeiten]

Compare several contributions about the same topic. Identify producer, target group, possible intention and noticeable design choices.

Expected outcome: A comparison table with reasoned judgements.

Investigate roles in media production

[Bearbeiten]

Assign roles such as editor, author, camera operator, editor, platform, advertiser and audience to their tasks and possible interests.

Expected outcome: A role model of media production.

Distinguish advertising, information and opinion

[Bearbeiten]

Mark features of information, opinion, advertising and staging in examples and justify borderline cases.

Expected outcome: A reasoned classification using clear criteria.

Model platform logic and reach

[Bearbeiten]

Create a simple rule model that sorts posts by reactions, recency and interests. Discuss what the model makes more visible.

Expected outcome: An understanding of automated selection without treating visibility as truth.

Reflect on your own media use

[Bearbeiten]

For a limited period, record media type, purpose and whether content was searched for or recommended. Do not record private content.

Expected outcome: A data-minimising reflection on media use.

Analyse headlines and thumbnails

[Bearbeiten]

Compare factual and exaggerated versions and rewrite one into a fair, informative alternative.

Expected outcome: A revised headline or thumbnail concept with justification.

Plan your own media contribution

[Bearbeiten]

Plan topic, audience, purpose, format, sources and publication channel. Explain how you will gain attention without misleading people.

Expected outcome: A responsibly planned media concept.

Discuss responsibility and influence

[Bearbeiten]

Discuss what responsibilities platforms, producers and users each have.

Expected outcome: Reasoned perspectives on the roles involved.

Create a personal media checklist

[Bearbeiten]

Write six questions you want to ask before producing or sharing media content.

Expected outcome: A practical personal checklist.

Self-check

[Bearbeiten]
  • I can recognise possible interests behind media content.
  • I can distinguish advertising, information, opinion and staging.
  • I can explain basic platform logic and reach.
  • I can analyse design choices and their effects.
  • I can plan my own media content with an audience, purpose and sources in mind.
