Digital Literacy – Year 4
Erscheinungsbild
Digital Literacy in Year 4 consolidates the skills of the previous years and places greater emphasis on critical judgement, technical understanding, responsible participation, security and independent digital production.
The year is organised around the five competence areas of the Austrian curriculum: Orientation, Information, Communication, Production and Action. The technically/media-oriented (T), societal/cultural (G) and interaction-related (I) perspectives are combined as appropriate.
What you should be able to do by the end of Year 4
[Bearbeiten]- assess opportunities and limitations of artificial intelligence;
- recognise exaggerated optimism and pessimism in debates about technology;
- analyse filter bubbles, stereotypes, framing and manipulation techniques;
- plan backups and restore data;
- handle user data and privacy settings responsibly;
- update, optimise and integrate information into digital knowledge structures;
- explain the basic functions of network protocols;
- understand how social-media business interests can influence attention, worldview and self-image;
- communicate responsibly while respecting copyright and image rights;
- design programs with combined control structures and develop them iteratively;
- choose digital representation forms according to audience and purpose;
- collaborate creatively using shared digital tools;
- develop simple applications to solve practical problems;
- explain interactions between applications, system software, drivers, firmware and hardware;
- use encryption concepts and tools responsibly;
- use digital communication for civic participation and engagement;
- make more self-determined choices through deliberate technical configuration.

[Bearbeiten]- AI and verification: use AI deliberately, check important output and understand where human responsibility remains necessary.
- Media analysis: examine framing, stereotypes, synthetic media, data visualisation and commercial platform interests.
- Data protection and security: manage user data, backups, encryption, permissions, updates and account protection.
- Networks: understand packets, addressing and important protocols such as TCP/IP, HTTP(S), DNS and e-mail protocols.
- Programming: plan applications, combine conditions and loops, test boundary cases and improve software iteratively.
- Media production: choose suitable formats, collaborate in teams, manage versions and publish responsibly.
- Participation: use digital communication for school and civic engagement while checking credibility and protecting people involved.
